To always keep your render results with the highest possible quality,
always save your projects as PNG files first. If you need a smaller
version, you can convert the PNG to a JPG file later. Depending on your
project, you might want to use EXR for post-processing. But, in most
cases, a PNG is the best choice.
The reason to keep your renders as PNG files is because it uses a type
of compression for images called lossless. With this method, you get
larger file sizes but with no data loss from your renders. It is a
compression similar to what ZIP containers do with text files.
On the other hand, a JPG file uses a compression method called lossy,
which excludes some information to reduce file size. Every time you
save a JPG file, the algorithm will exclude data from your image to
reduce file size.
For that reason, try to save all renders as PNG files first and then
convert them to JPG later if you need a smaller file.
